The Spotted Blue-Eye Aru IV (Pseudomugil gertrudae) is an exceptionally delicate dwarf fish that impresses with its bright blue eyes and characteristically spotted fins. This peaceful inhabitant is ideal for densely planted aquariums and enriches the middle and upper water areas with its elegant appearance.
Origin and Habitat
The species Pseudomugil gertrudae originally originates from Australia and New Guinea. There it preferentially inhabits shallow, densely planted waters, slow-flowing streams and swamps, which offer the animals plenty of hiding places and a rich spectrum of food.
Appearance and Size
With a final size of around 4 cm, the Spotted Blue-Eye is one of the smaller aquarium inhabitants. The animals have a slender body shape, translucent scales with dark spots and distinctively spotted fins that are often edged in yellow to white. The intensely glowing blue iris gives the fish its name.
Aquarium Care
For the long-term care of Pseudomugil gertrudae Aru IV, an aquarium with a length from 60 cm (approx. 54 litres) is recommended. The water temperature should be between 22 and 30 °C, with a pH value of 6.0 to 8.5. The general hardness can be 2 to 15 dGH, while the carbonate hardness ideally lies between 2 and 12 dKH.
Dense peripheral planting with fine-leaved aquatic plants as well as the use of floating plants create natural retreats and shaded zones. The tank should feature low to moderate current to meet the natural needs of these delicate rainbowfish relatives.
Socialisation
The Spotted Blue-Eye is a very peaceful group fish and should be kept in a group of at least 6 to 10 animals. In a group, the males show their fascinating display behaviour, spreading their fins like little sails. Socialisation with other quiet, small fish species or dwarf shrimp is completely problem-free.
Feeding
Due to its small mouth, Pseudomugil gertrudae requires fine food. Offer the animals high-quality fine granules and flake food. For optimal nutrient supply and colour intensification, the diet should be supplemented regularly with small live and frozen foods such as Artemia nauplii.
