The clown killifish (Epiplatys annulatus), also called banded panchax, comes from West Africa (Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone), where it inhabits small, plant rich waters. In captivity it reaches a total length of up to 4 cm.
Its base colour is bright silvery with three broad black and blue transverse bands that continue into the fins. Males have pointed, bright red and yellow fins, while the fins of females are rounded and colourless. As a surface hunter it catches small insects and invertebrates from cover under floating plants. Eggs are laid singly on water plants, and the fry hatch after 8 to 10 days.
