Pseudomugil gertrudae, known as the Spotted Jellyfish Blue-Eye, is a fascinating small aquarium inhabitant that delights with its bright blue eyes and delicate fin structure. These animals come from German captive breeding (CB) and are perfectly acclimated to conditions in the home aquarium. Due to their lively and peaceful nature, they enrich every suitably set up tank.
Origin and Habitat
The Spotted Jellyfish Blue-Eye has its natural home in Australia as well as southern New Guinea. There it prefers to inhabit densely planted, slow-flowing or still waters, clear water streams, and swampy areas. These natural habitats are often characterised by weed-filled bank zones that offer protection and food for the animals.
Appearance and Size
With a final size of around 4 to 4.5 cm, Pseudomugil gertrudae is one of the smaller relatives of the rainbowfish family. The slender, slightly transparent body features a fine dotted pattern extending across the flanks and delicate fins. A special characteristic is the strikingly bright blue iris rings as well as the impressively enlarged and spotted dorsal and anal fins of the males, which are proudly displayed during courtship.
Aquarium Care
For the successful care of Pseudomugil gertrudae, an aquarium with a length from 60 cm is recommended. The water temperature should be between 22 and 27 °C, while the tolerated pH value ranges from 5.0 to 8.0. The tank should feature dense perimeter planting and floating plants, which offer natural hiding places while still leaving the fish sufficient open swimming space in the middle and upper areas.
Socialisation and Behaviour
Pseudomugil gertrudae is an exceptionally peaceful schooling fish that must be kept in a group. Only in the company of several conspecifics do the animals show their natural behaviour and lose their shyness. Socialisation with other small, calm fish species, dwarf shrimp, or peaceful snails is usually completely problem-free.
Feeding
The Spotted Jellyfish Blue-Eye is uncomplicated when it comes to diet. It readily accepts fine commercial food such as granules, flakes, and crushed tablets. To supplement their diet and promote vibrant colours and vitality, small frozen foods such as Artemia, Daphnia, or Cyclops should be offered regularly.
