The Moluccan fan shrimp ranges from India and Sri Lanka through Thailand, the Malay Peninsula and Indonesia to New Guinea, and owes its name to the Indonesian Moluccas. It grows up to 8.6 cm and is highly variable in colour: the base tone ranges from light to dark brown, with dark lateral stripes, broken patterns or a pale dorsal line.
The two pairs of fan legs filter suspended particles out of the water but are also used for walking and propping up, with the bristles folding into small cones. It does not reproduce in captivity.
