Hasemania nana, the copper tetra, was first introduced to Europe in 1937 and is now bred worldwide. The slim males are copper coloured with white fin tips and a black band running to the forked caudal fin; females are stockier and paler. Unlike most tetras, it lacks an adipose fin.
The peaceful copper tetra should be kept in a group of at least 10; during the spawning season males show pronounced territorial behaviour. As an egg scatterer, breeding is quite manageable at a temperature between 25 and 28 °C, a pH of 6 to 6.5 and a total hardness around 10 °dGH.
