The Bluefin Notho is without a doubt one of the most impressive species in the aquarium hobby. As German captive-bred stock, Nothobranchius rachovii provides you with a charming killifish that immediately catches everyone's eye with its incomparable colour intensity and enriches any well-maintained aquarium.
Origin and Habitat
Nothobranchius rachovii originally comes from temporary waters in South-East Africa, such as those found in Mozambique. These natural habitats regularly dry up completely during the dry season, which is why the fish have adapted to a unique life cycle. Thanks to successful captive breeding, these beautiful animals have established a firm place in fishkeeping.
Appearance and Size
The males of this species in particular are true gems. They display a breathtaking pattern of vibrant blue, turquoise and bold red that extends across their entire body and fins. The females are coloured in more understated shades of brown, which offers them perfect camouflage in their natural environment. Reaching a final size of around 5 to 6 cm, this killifish remains wonderfully compact.
Aquarium Care
An aquarium with a minimum length of 60 cm is suitable for successfully keeping these fish. The tank should be well structured and offer plenty of hiding places, which can be created using roots, stones and dense planting. Regarding water parameters, the fish proves to be adaptable. A temperature between 19 and 28 °C and a pH value of 7.0 to 8.2 provide optimal conditions for the well-being of these animals.
Tankmates and Behaviour
The Bluefin Notho is considered a very peaceful aquarium inhabitant. These fish are best kept in pairs or in a small harem consisting of one male and several females. As males can display territorial behaviour towards one another, this group composition ensures harmonious cohabitation in the tank.
Feeding
When it comes to diet, these German captive-bred killifish prove to be remarkably straightforward. They eagerly accept high-quality frozen food, but can just as easily be fed standard commercial granules, flake food and food tablets. A varied diet supports their vitality and the full development of their splendid colours.
