The shell of the assassin snail is conical to slender tower shaped, 18 to 28 mm high and 7 to 13 mm across when adult. The base colour is yellow to olive brown, either plain or with up to three brown spiral bands.
Shell shape, ornament and pattern vary strongly within the species; the six to eight whorls usually carry axial ribs. Clea helena feeds on other snails and is therefore used deliberately against snail outbreaks.
