Nannostomus espei, known as Espe's pencilfish, is a sought-after rarity from South America that is rather infrequently found in the trade. This attractive small characin enriches any well-planted aquarium and fascinates aquarists with its elegant appearance and interesting behaviour.
Origin and Habitat
Espe's pencilfish originates from the tropical freshwaters of South America. There, it prefers slow-flowing or still stretches of water that are rich in underwater vegetation, driftwood and shaded bank areas.
Appearance and Size
This pencilfish stands out with its very special pattern of striking oblique stripes along its slender body. Its elegant body shape and fine markings make this species a real eye-catcher in the tank. With its small final size, it is one of the smaller characin species that are ideal for keeping in aquariums.
Aquarium Care
For the successful keeping of Espe's pencilfish, an aquarium with a minimum length of 60 cm is recommended. The tank should be well-structured and feature dense planting to provide hiding places for the animals. Sufficient open swimming space is equally important so that the fish can display their natural swimming behaviour.
The water parameters prove to be quite adaptable. The water temperature should be between 22 and 28 °C, while the pH value can cover a range of 6.0 to 8.0. Gentle current and lighting that is not too bright contribute to the well-being of the animals.
Behaviour and Tankmates
Nannostomus espei is a remarkably peaceful schooling fish. In order to observe its natural social behaviour and save it from stress, it must be kept in a group. In the company of its own kind, it displays harmonious behaviour and loses its shyness.
Socialisation with other peaceful, smaller aquarium inhabitants such as quiet tetras, small catfish or dwarf shrimp is possible without any problems. Large or very active fish should be avoided so that these delicate pencilfish are not intimidated.
Feeding
Espe's pencilfish is very uncomplicated when it comes to diet. It readily accepts high-quality fine granules and flake food as well as suitable tabs. Regularly supplementing the menu with fine frozen food provides variety, promotes vitality and supports the splendid colouration of the animals.
