Before you order: is Cherry Congo Tetra (Alestopetersius brichardi "Red") right for your tank?

Animals and plants differ in their demands on water parameters, tank size and tank mates. Please check the details in the tabs below before you buy. If you are unsure, just get in touch before ordering — we are happy to advise.

The Cherry Congo Tetra is a particularly fascinating aquarium inhabitant that immediately draws all eyes with its vibrant colors and elegant swimming behavior. This peaceful tetra brings life and an exotic atmosphere to larger community tanks.

Origin and Habitat

Alestopetersius brichardi "Red" originates from the African rivers of the Congo Basin. In its natural habitat, it mostly inhabits slightly acidic, soft waters characterized by shade and driftwood.

Appearance and Size

This tetra reaches a final size of around 7.5 to 8 cm. Particularly impressive is the intense, reddish coloration of the males, which offers a magnificent sight in combination with their delicately developed fins.

Aquarium Care

For long-term care, an aquarium with a length of at least 120 cm is recommended, as these fish enjoy swimming. The Cherry Congo Tetra prefers water temperatures between 23 and 30 °C as well as a pH value in the range of 4.2 to 7.0. Fine planting along the edges and roots as hiding places provide cover, while sufficient open swimming space should be maintained.

Behavior and Compatibility

As a pronounced schooling fish, the Cherry Congo Tetra strictly requires the company of a group of its own kind. Only in a group do the animals lose their shyness and display their natural social behavior. The species is extremely peaceful towards other tank mates, making it ideally suited for community aquariums.

Feeding

When it comes to diet, this tetra proves to be an uncomplicated keeper. It readily accepts high-quality granulated, flake, and tablet food. Regular supplementation with a varied selection of frozen food promotes health and makes the colors shine even more intensely.
