The Dwarf Pencilfish ("Nannostomus marginatus") is a fascinating and peaceful aquarium inhabitant that wins people over with its charming nature. As a captive-bred specimen (CB), this variety is particularly well acclimatised to conditions in home aquariums and enriches any well-planted tank.
Origin and Habitat
Originally, the Dwarf Pencilfish originates from the extensive river systems of the Amazon basin in South America. There, it prefers to inhabit slow-flowing, densely vegetated bank zones and nutrient-poor blackwater areas.
Appearance and Size
With its small final size, this characin is one of the smaller representatives of its genus. A characteristic feature of the Dwarf Pencilfish is its striking dark longitudinal striping, which runs across its entire slender body and forms a beautiful contrast to its base colouration.
Aquarium Care
For successful care, an aquarium with a minimum length of 60 cm is recommended. The layout should offer densely planted zones that provide the animals with hiding places, while at the same time leaving them sufficient open swimming space. Regarding water parameters, the species proves to be very adaptable. The ideal water temperature is between 22 and 26 °C, while the pH value can cover a range of 6.0 to 8.0.
Tankmates
The Dwarf Pencilfish is a pronounced shoaling fish and should always be kept in a group of several specimens. In the company of its own kind, the fish lose their shyness and display an interesting range of behaviours. Thanks to its very peaceful nature, it can be combined excellently with other quiet species in a community tank.
Feeding
Feeding these small characins in everyday aquarium life is straightforward. They readily accept fine granules, high-quality flake food and suitable tabs. To add variety and promote colour intensity, the diet can be supplemented regularly with small frozen foods.
