Thoracocharax stellatus, the giant hatchetfish, also called the platinum hatchetfish, comes mainly from northern South America and reaches about 7 cm when adult; animals usually arrive at around 3 cm. As a schooling fish it inhabits the upper water layers, feeding there on water insects as well as insects landing on the surface.
It has no special husbandry demands and, with the exception of East African cichlids, combines easily with other species. As a tetra it should be kept in a group of at least 6; the aquarium must be well covered.
| Feeding | slow sinking flake food, occasionally surface insects like micro crickets and drosophila |
| Tank mates | possible with almost all species except East African cichlids; group of at least 6, keep tank covered |
