Phenacogrammus aurantiacus, known as the Golden Congo Tetra, is a fascinating and magnificent species of tetra from Africa. With its elegantly shimmering scales and warm, golden colouration, this lively inhabitant brings a very special dynamic to the aquascape. The soft colouration of these animals unfolds its full effect particularly against a dark substrate and under tailored lighting.
Origin and Habitat
The natural distribution area of the Golden Congo Tetra lies in the flowing waters of Central Africa. There, the species mainly inhabits soft and slightly acidic river sections, which are often characterised by overhanging bank vegetation and shaded zones.
Appearance and Size
In addition to the typical, slightly high-backed body shape of African tetras, the namesake golden glow stands out in particular. The delicate fins and slightly iridescent scales softly reflect the light. Fully grown specimens develop an impressive stature, which is why their elegant appearance comes into its own particularly well in large aquariums.
Aquarium Care
For successful care, an aquarium with a minimum length of 120 cm is required. The active Congo Tetra requires plenty of free swimming space in the middle of the tank. Dense marginal planting gives the animals security and serves as a retreat. Water temperatures between 20 and 28 °C and a pH value in the slightly acidic range of 6.0 to 7.0 are optimal. A slightly dimming cover of floating plants promotes the natural behaviour of the fish.
Behaviour and Socialisation
Phenacogrammus aurantiacus Golden is a distinctly peaceful shoaling fish. It should be kept in a group of at least six to eight animals, as keeping them individually leads to stress. In the company of other quiet and peaceful species, such as bottom-dwelling catfish or smaller African cichlids, this tetra shows its best side.
Feeding
This tetra proves to be uncomplicated regarding diet. It accepts high-quality dry food in the form of flakes or granules without any problems. To promote the vitality and colouration of the animals, the menu should be regularly supplemented with fine frozen food and live food such as mosquito larvae or brine shrimp.
