Microdevario kubotai, also called the emerald dwarf rasbora, comes from the Thai part of the Malay Peninsula as well as adjoining river systems in Myanmar. Its habitat waters have a moderate current and are vegetated, which is needed for spawning.
The fish reaches a length of about 2 cm and is coloured yellowish to yellowish green, with a gold shimmering stripe along the body sides; the eye, gill cover and belly also shimmer gold. The fins are colourless and transparent, and a lateral line is absent.
