The Flash Pleco L204 (Panaqolus albivermis) is an eye-catcher in any aquarium due to its extraordinary appearance. Its high-contrast coloration makes it one of the most popular L-number catfish among aquarists.
Origin and habitat
Panaqolus albivermis originates from South America, where it is predominantly found in the flowing waters of Peru. In its natural habitat, it prefers areas with abundant driftwood and undercut riverbanks, which provide protection and food.
Appearance and size
The characteristic feature of the L204 is its dark, usually deep brown to blackish-brown base color, traversed by fine, yellowish to whitish transverse stripes. This striking pattern is reminiscent of striped socks, giving rise to its German name. In the aquarium, this catfish reaches a final size of around 12 to 15 cm.
Aquarium care
For long-term care of Panaqolus albivermis, an aquarium with a minimum length of 100 cm is required. Regarding water parameters, the catfish proves adaptable and feels comfortable at water temperatures between 24 and 30 °C and a pH value between 6.0 and 8.5.
Good tank structuring is particularly important for its well-being. In addition to various hiding places such as clay caves or rock formations, the presence of real wood is essential, as the L204 rasps it for its digestion.
Tankmates
The Flash Pleco is considered extremely peaceful. It is ideally suited for community tanks and can easily be kept alongside other quiet fish species, hatchetfish, tetras, or other peaceful bottom-dwellers.
Feeding
In addition to the essential rasping wood, the L204 is uncomplicated when it comes to further food intake. It readily accepts commercial dry food such as granules, flakes, and special catfish tablets. For variety, frozen food can be added to the diet regularly.
Behavior
Like most loricariids, the Flash Pleco is crepuscular and nocturnal. During the day, it likes to retreat into its caves or under driftwood shelters, but it also emerges during feeding under light. Males can be territorial towards one another, which is why a sufficient number of caves should be provided.
