The Neon Blue Dwarf Snakehead, scientifically known as "Channa andrao", is one of the most fascinating and at the same time most compact predatory fish in the aquarium hobby. With its intense bright blue colouring on the fins and body, this impressive fish catches everyone's eye. Despite its predatory lifestyle, it delights aquarists with its distinct and highly interesting behaviour.
Origin and Habitat
This species originates from the subtropical regions of India. There, "Channa andrao" mainly inhabits densely vegetated, rather calm water sections with gentle currents that are subject to seasonal temperature fluctuations.
Appearance and Size
"Channa andrao" is characterized by its elongated, cylindrical body and characteristic snake-like head. Particularly striking are the bright neon blue borders and accents on the fins. With a final size of around 10 to 13 cm, this species is one of the smaller representatives of the snakeheads.
Aquarium Care
An aquarium with a minimum length of 80 cm or a volume of around 100 litres is suitable for long-term care. The tank should be densely planted and offer plenty of hiding places with driftwood and caves. The water parameters should be at a pH value of 6.0 to 8.0, a total hardness of 5 to 15 dGH, and a carbonate hardness of 2 to 10 dKH. As the species comes from subtropical areas, the ideal temperature range is between 18 and 28 °C. A cooler winter period at the lower temperature range is strictly required for the well-being of the animals. Furthermore, a seamless and secure aquarium cover is essential, as these fish are excellent jumpers.
Tankmates
"Channa andrao" is best kept as a pair in a well-structured species-only aquarium. As they are predatory fish, small fish are viewed as food and eaten. Socialisation with smaller species must therefore be strictly avoided.
Feeding
As a typical predator, the Neon Blue Dwarf Snakehead prefers hearty frozen and live food. After a period of acclimatisation, the animals usually accept high-quality pellet food without any problems.
Behaviour and Breeding
"Channa andrao" displays the typical, characterful behaviour of snakeheads. The animals attentively observe their surroundings and establish strong territorial behaviour when kept in pairs. They practice intensive brood care, which makes breeding them in the home aquarium a particularly exciting experience.
