Dwarf Chain Loach - Ambastaia sidthimunki

The dwarf chain loach, scientifically known as Ambastaia sidthimunki, is one of the most fascinating and popular ornamental fish in the aquarium hobby. With its distinctive pattern and agile behaviour, it enriches any well-structured freshwater aquarium. As this species is one of the smaller loaches with a final size of around 5 to 6 cm, it can be kept successfully even in smaller tanks.

Origin and Habitat

Ambastaia sidthimunki originally comes from Thailand. In its native habitat, it prefers flowing waters as well as shallow river sections with a clean, clear current. The natural habitat is characterised by numerous hiding places between stones, wood structures and dense underwater vegetation.

Appearance and Size

The dwarf chain loach owes its distinctive name to its eye-catching markings. A dark, net-like pattern, strongly reminiscent of a chain link or chessboard, stands out against a light, yellowish to beige base colour. Fully grown, these slender animals reach a body length of around 5 to 6 cm.

Aquarium Care

For the long-term care of these active fish, an aquarium with a minimum length of 60 cm or a volume of approx. 60 to 80 litres is required. The tank should have a moderate to good current. The ideal water parameters are a temperature of 22 to 28 °C, a pH value between 5.0 and 7.5, a general hardness of 2 to 15 °dGH and a carbonate hardness of 1 to 10 °dKH. Fine sand or fine-grained gravel is recommended as a substrate, supplemented by hiding places such as wood, caves and densely planted areas.

Social Behaviour and Tankmates

The dwarf chain loach is a very peaceful species that must be kept in a group of at least 5 to 6 animals. The fish only display their natural behaviour and lose their shyness when kept together with enough conspecifics. Socialisation with other peaceful tetras, rasboras or dwarf cichlids is usually problem-free.

Feeding

As an uncomplicated omnivore, Ambastaia sidthimunki is very easy to feed. It accepts common dry food such as granules, flakes and food tablets without hesitation. Regular supplementation with high-quality frozen and live food promotes the vitality and colouration of the animals in an optimal way.

Behaviour

Dwarf chain loaches are sociable and predominantly diurnal aquarium inhabitants. They tirelessly scour the lower and middle areas of the tank for food. The peaceful interaction within the group offers the observer a constantly interesting spectacle.
