Ruby Tetra (Axelrodia riesei)

The Ruby Tetra (Axelrodia riesei) is a fascinating dwarf tetra from South America that impresses with its subtle elegance. With its small body size and peaceful nature, this delicate tetra is an ideal choice for well-maintained community tanks and planted aquariums.

Origin and Habitat

Axelrodia riesei originates from the tropical freshwater bodies of South America. There, it preferably inhabits densely vegetated, rather slow-flowing sections of streams and rivers that are often slightly tinted by humic substances.

Appearance and Size

This miniature fish only reaches a final size of around 2.5 to 3 cm. Its slender body displays a fine, reddish coloration that shimmers beautifully under appropriate aquarium lighting. Its coloration comes into its own particularly well over a dark substrate and in contrast to lush green aquatic plants.

Aquarium Care

For successful long-term care, an aquarium with a length of at least 60 cm is recommended. The water temperature should be in the range of 23 to 30 °C, while the pH value can range between 6.0 and 7.5. The tank should be densely planted to offer the animals natural retreats, but at the same time provide sufficient open swimming space.

Socialization

The Ruby Tetra is an extremely sociable schooling fish that must be kept in a group to display its natural behavior and feel secure. Due to its peaceful nature, it can be perfectly combined with other small, calm fish, dwarf shrimp, or catfish.

Feeding

Regarding diet, the Ruby Tetra is very uncomplicated. It readily accepts standard flake food, fine granules, and small food tablets. To enrich the diet and promote vitality, fine frozen food suitable for the mouth size of these dwarf tetras should be offered regularly.
