The Marbled Hatchetfish (Carnegiella strigata) is a fascinating aquarium inhabitant that stands out due to its unique body shape and interesting behaviour. As a specialized surface fish, it sets stylish accents in the upper area of the tank and enriches any peaceful community aquarium.
Origin and Habitat
Carnegiella strigata originates from the extensive Amazon region in South America. There, it primarily inhabits calm, slow-flowing forest streams and flooded rainforest areas with dense bank vegetation.
Appearance and Size
The most striking feature of this tetra is the strongly keel-shaped belly drawn downwards, to which it owes its name. The attractive pattern of dark, marbled stripes on a silvery background gives it an elegant appearance.
Aquarium Care
Care is successful in aquariums starting from a length of 60 cm. Since the animals spend their time almost exclusively directly below the water surface, a reliable tank cover is essential, as hatchetfish are excellent jumpers. Floating plants create natural shading and ensure that the fish feel completely at ease.
Regarding water parameters, the animals prove to be adaptable. A pH value of 6.0 to 8.0 and water temperatures between 24 and 30 °C offer optimal conditions for these fish.
Social Behaviour and Tankmates
The Marbled Hatchetfish is an extremely peaceful schooling fish. It should always be kept in a group of at least five to ten individuals to display its natural social behaviour. In a community tank, it combines ideally with peaceful fish from the middle and lower water regions.
Feeding
Food intake preferably takes place directly at the water surface. The tetra accepts fine flake and granule food without any problems. Suitable frozen food is also eaten very readily and provides a varied diet.
